AgroFair. Heinrich Grandi shares his story

We source our bananas primarily from El Guabo, an association of small-scale banana producers in south-eastern Ecuador (Asociación de Pequeños Productores de El Guabo). Today, El Guabo has around 350 members cultivating a total area of approximately 1,000 hectares.
More than 100 of El Guabo's farmers already grow bananas using organic farming methods, while many others are currently transitioning to organic production. El Guabo was founded in 1997 by 14 small-scale farmers, who established partnerships with Fair Trade organisations in Europe from the very beginning.
Before forming the association, these farmers depended on intermediaries to market their bananas. By joining forces, they were able to sell their produce directly, giving them greater independence and significantly fairer trading conditions.
Fair Trade guarantees the farmers a fair price, which is usually higher than the market price. In addition, the Fair Trade premium generated through banana sales helps finance community development projects in areas such as education, healthcare and social security. It also supports improvements in farming practices and assists farmers in the transition to organic agriculture.
