Schmid Oberrautner. Florian Schmid:

The Schmid Oberrautner Winery is one of the oldest family-run wineries in South Tyrol. Since 1363, the winery has been located in Gries, and Florian is now managing the business in its 21st generation. The family therefore looks back on more than 650 years of winemaking tradition, combining experience with new ideas for the future.
A particular focus is placed on producing wines mainly from the winery’s own grapes and on managing the business sustainably. For this reason, Florian is increasingly relying on fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWI), which require less plant protection and make an important contribution to resource-efficient agriculture. With this approach, the winery also aims to actively address the challenges of climate change.
As a second business area, the company offers farm holidays. Guests particularly appreciate the historic atmosphere, the peaceful location and the close connection to viticulture. As the farm is a listed historic building, opportunities for structural expansions and further development of the business are limited. This makes it all the more important to use existing structures wisely and to continue developing the farm with care and consideration.

The funded project

Thanks to financing from Ethical Banking, the winery was able to install a photovoltaic system on an available area of the property. Today, the system covers almost 70% of the winery’s total electricity needs. This not only helps protect the environment but also reduces the farm’s dependence on external energy sources.
The energy generated is used directly for the winery’s daily operations and helps to reduce operating costs in the long term. At the same time, the investment represents an important step towards more sustainable and future-oriented management of the winery.
