Financing Report

As a long-serving fire brigade commander, Reinhard Lunger had already faced several emergency situations throughout his life. However, in spring 2019, he became the victim of a serious traffic accident himself: he drove his minibus into the rear of a semi-trailer truck without braking and suffered life-threatening injuries.
Since then, Reinhard Lunger has relied on a wheelchair, as he is no longer able to move his legs. “It feels as if you are constantly sitting in ice-cold water. The pain is always there,” he says.
The now 55-year-old has accepted his situation, found new strength and regained his courage to embrace life. With the help of an Ethical Banking development loan, Reinhard Lunger was able to adapt his home to make it fully accessible. He also drives a nine-seater vehicle, uses a handbike and rides a motorcycle – all of which have been adapted to his needs.
His son Fabian now runs the family’s craft business, while Reinhard Lunger continues to serve as commander of the Karersee Volunteer Fire Brigade. In the municipal elections one year ago, the citizens of Welschnofen elected him as deputy mayor of the municipality.
Reinhard Lunger has never lost his joy for life after the accident. “When I realised in hospital that I would no longer be able to move my legs, I told myself: ‘Reinhard, now you have to learn to master your life in a new way.’ Since then, not a single hour has passed in which I have questioned my fate,” says the father of a family with confidence.
Reinhard Lunger leads an independent life and requires very little assistance. Together with his wife, he regularly goes on longer motorcycle trips, uses his handbike to stay fit and continues to be actively involved in social activities. His contentment, independence and zest for life are truly inspiring.
